Major Works of Literature: Prepare to read up to 100 pages per week from the following core list:
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros
Night by Eli Weisel
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
Shorter Works of Literature: We will read excerpts, poetry and short stories from the text, Language of Literature, McDougal Littell Publishers including selections from Homer’s Odyssey.
Papers to Write: In addition to daily in class writings and shorter homework assignments, students will write finished essays after completing several drafts. Expect to learn how to write essays in the following forms:
The Autobiographical Incident: Students will choose a meaningful incident from their lives.
The Expository Essay: Students develop a point of view and defend it, using examples.
Literary Essay: Students will interpret and analyze literature.
Mini-Novella Students will embark upon an autobiographical creative writing project.
Vocabulary Building: Students can expect to learn at least ten new words per week. Words are listed on line at Mr. Lynch’s website noted above. Words are set within a humorous cartoon context to help students remember definitions. Vocabulary will also be gleaned from the various literary works being read.
Free Writing: The first 10 minutes of each period will be spent journal writing. As soon as students enter the room, they will pick up their journals and begin writing about the topic on the white board. Students will receive five points each day for being their seat quietly writing and ten points for a completed journal entry for the day (at least half a page).
Grading:
Homework (including reading): 20% Journal Entries: 20%
Essays, exams and projects: 40% Participation 20%
(Including vocabulary quizzes)
Homework Policy: I do not accept late homework assignments. Missed assignments because of excused illness may be made up in the following five (5) school days.
Tutorial: Students who miss class for any reason are expected to come to the next tutorial to find out what has been missed. The teacher will assign a mandatory tutorial to anyone who may have fallen behind for any reason. Students are encouraged to come to tutorial if they are having any difficulty. (Tues and Thurs: 7:30 to 8:05AM)
